The name Indaiatuba is formed by two words from the Tupi-Guarani language: "Indaiá" is a kind of palm ( Attalea dubia ), and “tuba” means a big quantity. Therefore, Indaiatuba means “many Indáias”. This name is related to the characteristics of the city's landscape and vegetation, which have changed. It became official in 1830, although some say that it was used before that time.

The remarkable presence of Indaia-like palms full of small nuts, caused Indaiatuba to receive the name of Cocais, between the beginning of the 18 th century and the end of the 20 th century. At first, the village which originated the city of Indaiatuba was called Votura, which refers to the rivulet whose mouth was near the place that was populated.

With 190.000 inhabitants, Indaiatuba is situated 99 km from São Paulo and only 25 km from Campinas. Its privileged localization, good infrastructure, good life quality indicators, temperate climate, annual average temperature of 22ºC, dry winter and rainy summer, help the city to grow more and more. Thus, big investments are attracted while new jobs are created in the tourism industry there.

The main highway that goes to Indaiatiba is called Rodovia Santos Dumont, which reaches the main economic Poles of the State because it is linked to other important highways, such as: SP-348 Rodovia Bandeirantes, SP-280 Rodovia Castelo Branco, SP-330 Rodovia Anhangüera, SP-65 Rodovia Dom Pedro I and Rodovia do Açúcar.

Due to its development, Indaiatuba has become a tourist city. You must be asking yourself how it is possible since such city has no beaches, no waterfalls and no mountains. That's where you're wrong.

Indaiatuba is well-known for its business tourism. It has big companies from the automotive industry, such as Toyota from Brazil and General Motors' test field. It has a famous convent called Mosteiro de Itaici, where the National Conference of Bishops from Brazil (CNBB) is held. Rural tourism is also present there, and you can visit many nice places, such as the small farm called Sítio Bela Vista, where organic “acerolas” ( Malpighia glabra L. ) are produced and you can have delicious products made from them. Indaiatuba is also one of the biggest table grape growers of the State. We cannot forget to mention the event tourism, in which motocross, bike crossing, skating and biking tournaments are held. Therefore, do come and visit the city where the Warmth of Sun Feels Like Friendship.
